Alton Street is a short dead-end street in the east part of town, running about 400 feet north from Baldwin Road, west of Allen Road, and ending in a turnaround. It was laid out on "Baldwin Manor, Subdivided for Roger Toothaker, Jr.," a plan dated June 1960 and drawn by James B. Monahan, registered land surveyor, approved by the Planning Board on July 28, 1960 and recorded on September 30, 1960 (Plan Book 93, Plan 118). The plan laid out two short streets off the north side of Baldwin Road behind a row of existing house lots: Alton Street on the west, with Lots 9 to 12 of 30,000 square feet to 1.4 acres around its circle, and Urban Street on the east, with Lots 13 to 18. The origin of the name Alton has not been found.
The assessors date most of the houses on Alton Street to 1960 and 1961. The street was among the sixty-two streets accepted as public ways under Article 40 of the annual town meeting of 1972. During the construction of sewer under the town's Sewer Extension Contract 35, about 2016, the water main in Alton Street was found to be transite pipe, and 466 feet of new eight-inch main were laid from the end of the street to Baldwin Road.
